Periodontitis is the result of a bacterium in the plaque that infects the gums and causes them to swell and bleed. In some cases it has been linked to oral cancer. You can visit dental websites to see images of gum disease in case you want to see how it looks like.

Gum disease types

  • Gingivitis is the most common and mild form of gum disease. It’s usually caused by inappropriate oral hygiene procedures. It’s not usually painful, but it causes swelling of the gums, redness and frequent bleeding. Gingivitis can be cured with professional dental treatment and good oral hygiene practices.
  • Periodontitis develops if gingivitis is left untreated. The bacterium in the plaque infects the gums, causing the gums to rupture. This loosens teeth and creates openings in the pockets between infected teeth and gums. Then the gums are destroyed and the teeth rotten.

There are several types of periodontitis.

– Aggressive periodontitis. This condition tends to be hereditary. It’s characterized by severe bone loss and destruction of the gum tissue.

– Chronic periodontitis. This form is usually slower than the aggressive form. This is the most common form of periodontal disease. It’s recognized by the receding gums and pockets that form between the teeth and gums.

– Necrotizing periodontitis. This is a very serious condition, usually associated with a weakened or non-functional immune system.

Protect the tooth enamel, because when it’s gone, it cannot be restored.  Dental infections and tooth loss can be very painful. When teeth are removed or fall, the ability to chew food properly decreases. Poorly chewed foods can cause nausea and malabsorption of nutrients in foods that can accumulate in the colon and cause peritonitis. Peritonitis is a very dangerous life-threatening disease.

A dentist or oral surgeon can detect the symptoms of gum disease, but the treatment requires a periodontist. Your teeth and gums are important to your overall health. Practice good oral hygiene. Consult your dentist regularly to clean and check.
